This year’s fall play is called “The Cripple Of Inishmaan”. The play, which is set in 1934, is based on the lives of residents in a small town on Inishmaan Island. The main character, Cripple Billy, played by Samantha S. ’18, learns that a movie called Man of Aran is being filmed on a nearby island. In a town where very little of any interest takes place, this movie is a big deal and Billy wants to be a part of it.

The cast has been rehearsing since before school started in September: learning their lines, immersing themselves in their characters, and learning how to speak with an Irish accent.

Ms.Britt, the director, says, “Because [the play] is in an Irish dialect and there is hard choreography, the girls are challenged in ways that they have never been challenged in the past. Also, this play is very honest and the characters just say what they think which can be a little shocking at times.

Izzy B-J. ’17, who is playing the role of Mammy in the upcoming play, says “Practice is going well. We have to have an Irish accent, so that’s a bit difficult. It is really fun and I think it will be a great play to see. It’s dark Irish comedy so it’s sad, but it’s also funny.” In addition to Izzy, many other members of the cast have been anticipating the play’s debut so they can share their hard work with the rest of the Hewitt community.

Cali B 19 says, “I am excited to play the most unfettered version of myself. My character, Helen, says whatever she wants and that is something I really love about her. I think that Upper School students especially, who see this play, will enjoy the crude humor and lack of restraint it exhibits.”

The Upper School is buzzing with excitement for the fall play. Carly S. 18 says, “I am so excited to see the Cripple of Inishmaan and I can’t wait to support my friends who are in the play. I wish the opening night would come sooner.”
The show goes up on October 27th and 28th!
