This post, one in a series for the sophomore English blog project, can be found featured on L’Oreal USA For Girls In Science here. We live in the 21st century, a progressive time in which equality rules… or so we’re told. But is that really the truth? The disheartening answer, when it comes to STEM, is no. STEMinism is the act of closing the gender gap in the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It is less about actual feminism and more about reaching a balanced world of STEM. Are you a STEMinist? At The Hewitt School, the idea that STEM careers are better suited for boys simply does not exist. The all-female environment provides a space for unique opportunities where girls can pursue any and all interests. Having attended Hewitt since kindergarten, I have … Continue reading →

Anyone who knows me even the tiniest bit is aware that my mother gave birth to two sets of twins. I have a twin brother, Scott, and a little brother and sister, Mark and Caitlyn, who just turned nine. You may also recognize this picture, as it has been my profile picture on Facebook for seven months now (and I have no intention of changing it anytime soon). Come on, tell me we aren’t adorable, especially because we were basically identical. (Scott and I, I mean. The second set was more aesthetically-fraternal.) Before you ask – no, my family’s twin fiesta was not planned in any way. (Scientists haven’t quite figured out how to make designer babies…yet.) The other question that I get is if we all have a twin-unique telekinetic connection. The truth is, … Continue reading →

With a yawn, I stretched and awoke from my nap on the tennis bus. I grabbed my phone and scrolled through my Facebook newsfeed, just checking to make sure I didn’t miss too much during my 40-minute nap, like maybe a promposal or someone changing their profile picture. I admit it; I have FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). As I scrolled through, though, there were what seemed to be a million statuses about Boston, phrases along the lines of “Stay strong, Boston.” Thinking nothing of them, I kept scrolling until someone posted a video entitled, “Boston Marathon Bombings – Clear footage” My jaw instantly dropped when I watched videos and continued to read about the hideous event that occurred. Once I understood what had happened, I understood why Facebook had gone into a frenzy. As … Continue reading →

Directly following the bombings at the finish line of the Boston marathon, dozens of people were rushed to every major hospital in the area with injuries so critical and so gruesome they could stump even Dr. House; doctors who had been preparing for dehydrated and hypothermic runners were suddenly faced with the decision of whether or not to remove a person’s leg, but perhaps what is even more unsettling is that there could be dozens more people who have suffered injuries and have been left untreated. The biggest concerns thus far range from ear damage to mild traumatic brain injuries to psychological trauma such as post traumatic stress disorder, more commonly known as PTSD. All of these conditions could be disregarded or seem insignificant in the beginning, but can cause serious damage in the long-run if left untreated. ”People … Continue reading →
