After spending only a few days in the Hewitt halls during the 2011/2012 school year, we cannot deny that this year is one of great change. However, it is not only the new faculty wandering our halls looking for the art rooms or PAC, but the building itself has received a facelift, giving us students one more thing to wrap our heads around.

Ms. Wolf excitedly standing in front the plans for the new and improved South Lab.

The places that have been subject to the most change are the North and South Labs.  The entire office that was in between the two classrooms is now gone.  The space created by the removal of this office will make both labs larger.  Ms. Kilt and Ms. Wolf now share the office behind the door in Science 101 (where Mr. Viscusi’s office used to be) along with new science teacher Lindsay Frey. New lab benches have arrived, and the cabinets in the rooms have been changed as well.  There have also been windows added to the North Lab and to Science 101, so be sure to look left and right on your way to and from the Gregory Building.

But no, the windows are not meant for students to make funny faces at the students in the class (which, remember, does not necessarily mean the students cannot do it to the students in the halls). This same rule applies for the physical education teachers, as they can now view the gymnasium through the windows located just above their desks in both of the balcony’s offices.

The Stacks Room has also gone through some remodeling, as the Stacks are now…. gone!  The name “Stacksless Room” has already started to stick. Eight comfortable red chairs now occupy the former space, providing students with a comfortable place to both socialize and study. Four desks were also brought in from the main reading room, providing even more seating opportunities (the ‘comfy chairs’ already seem to fill up pretty quickly). However, this furniture is only temporary. As soon as the community has decided on an appropriate use of the space, a permanent set of furniture will be purchased and installed.

Also, in the Middle School, an additional computer lab has been added to the 5th floor.

There is no denying that Hewitt has evolved in the last two years.  Let’s celebrate these creative changes as chances for new opportunities!
