“Ahoy”

This phrase was uttered countless times as Hewitt’s first pirate ship ever sailed down the East River. It may seem odd, but students relentlessly begged administration for a pirate club, and finally, the administration gave the idea a go. “We gave the idea a go,” said a member of the administration. “We wanted to be pirates” shared a 9th-grade member of the club. “We thought that it would be cool to be pirates,” a 10th-grade member coyly revealed.

After many fundraisers and events, The Hewitt School Pirate Club was able to raise enough money for a ship worthy of finding loot. “The ship was costly,” admitted a club founder, “We got the ship after raising money.” Throughout the year the pirate club shared it wasn’t all fun. “We struggled a lot, and it wasn’t all fun. We really wanted a hands-on experience, so we brought in a member’s friend who had some sailing experience.

They didn’t speak to us about anything sailing related, but they were qualified enough to speak to us in terms of if they wanted to speak about something pirate related.” After speaking to a Hewitt School student Sabby in the 12th grade, she shared the bitter reality, “I like being on the big boat because when the breeze hits your face, it feels so good.” The club really loves its boat, and I’m looking forward to writing and documenting their further adventures.
