After hearing the results from the 2016 presidential election, many Hewitt student and faculty members were left with mixed emotions and were not quite sure how to react to Donald Trump’s win. Many tears filled the Hewitt gym on November 9, 2016 as the entire upper school gathered to listen to Alexander Heffner’s thoughts on the recent election and what is to come for our country in the next four years. Heffner is a native New Yorker, and a graduate of Harvard University is the host of The Open Mind on PBS.

The main purpose of Heffner’s visit was to give the Hewitt community a greater understanding of what happened throughout the election and notify them that even though this is a hardship for many, they are not alone. Julia W ’19 said, “Everything Heffner said was very informative and taught me a lot more than I already knew about the recent election.” He noted that he, along with most political analysts, could not predict what was to come in the next four years of Donald Trump’s presidency and all we can do is hope that he has plans to lead our country to a brighter future.

All the members of the Hewitt community seemed to have found his talk educational as well as helpful in processing the results. Nora M. ‘19 said, “It was both very interesting and comforting to hear the political insight of of this recent election. Heffner made a lot of insightful comments that made me look at the entire situation from a new perspective.” Overall, Alexander Heffner was warmly embraced into the the Hewitt community and we hope to have him return sometime in the near future.
