To kick off the fall sports season, Hewitt’s student-athletes flew down to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The cross country, volleyball, and soccer teams trained with professionals for a week to prepare themselves for the upcoming season. For five days, the athletes performed workouts to improve strength and performance on the court, track, and field. The rigorous training also included classes about the mental aspect of sports. They took mental fitness, nutrition, and vision training classes to ensure the girls would be able to compete with a good mindset.

The teams are already off to a promising start this season. Beau Morki, the new head of athletics, along with the other coaches have greatly contributed to the morale in Hewitt athletics The girls have continued practicing their skills and are working hard to have a victorious season.

The cross country team worked on mental toughness and trained to get faster and stronger on the track. Amanda N. ‘18 said “The season is off to a really great start. Our coach is extremely enthusiastic and we are determined to work hard and see results this year.” The students and faculty cannot wait to see the team compete this year!

In addition to improving techniques and having a growth mindset, the preseason at IMG created a bond between all Hewitt athletes. Cara S. ‘18 said “This is my first year on varsity soccer at Hewitt and I am happy that I can be a part of the team. Practices have been so much fun and all the girls on the team have been bonding since preseason at IMG, regardless of our ages. We have such a supportive team and am excited to see how this season turns out.”

The volleyball team practiced their skills on the court and are ready to crush it this season. Nikki W. ‘17 said “Going to IMG Academy was a great opportunity for the volleyball team to learn not only physical skills, but also skills in terms of a mindset that would help prepare us for the upcoming season. Volleyball is my absolute favorite sport and I cannot wait for the season to start so we can show other schools what the Hawks are made of!”

As Bella. E ’18 put it, “This year is the most promising and exciting out of the past two years I’ve been on the Hewitt varsity soccer team. Coach Morki, is always finding new ways to keep our spirits high, and everyone on the team is extremely committed and energetic. I think we all have high hopes that this year will be very rewarding.”

The three teams are working their hardest in preparation for their upcoming games and races. All students and faculty should show up to support the Hawks at every race and game. Be sure to keep up with the sports calendar and attend the games! The fall sports teams have a great season ahead of them. Go Hawks!
