Winter Conditioning was a big hit this year, especially for Hewitt athletes, who did not want to be on the basketball or squash team, but wanted to stay in shape for the spring. The group of twenty girls, ranging from grades nine to eleven, commuted three times a week from school to Asphalt Green where they used the equipment and weights located at the facility to strengthen their muscles and endurance.

One of the girls on the team, Bella E. ’18 states, “I think the highlight of my experience of winter conditioning was being able to become stronger and feel more prepared for my spring sport, and learning how to do certain exercises in the correct forms and when and why we do them.”

In terms of the season highlights, Lara S. ’19 reported, “The highlight for me during winter conditioning was probably being allowed to use workout equipment. Most of the time, because we’re minors, we aren’t allowed to or have to be 16, and, since I’m under, 16 I felt a little special.”

Dribbling, shooting, passing, and defending, all the basic skills that a basketball player needs to know how to do. For the Hewitt Varsity team, these ten girls knew these skills and mastered them. This year, the girls worked hard, not only as individuals, but also as a team. Congratulations on a great season!

“The highlight of this basketball season would probably be almost winning our Spirit game  against Friends Seminary. The score was 31-30, ” said Nora M. ’19. The team played a great game against Friends Seminary and weren’t discouraged by the loss against Friends.

This year the squash team held tryouts and ended up with eleven girls, ranging from grades seven to twelve. The eleven girls on the team commuted everyday after school, taking the 6 train to the Yale Club. Their routine consisted of playing squash for an hour and then finishing with 45 minutes of conditioning. The girls also got to do yoga which helped to loosen their muscles and relax their bodies.

“The highlight of my experience playing squash this year was getting to know everyone on the team on a much deeper level than I did before,” said Taylor S. ’18. “I didn’t know the freshman and some of the other girls very well at the start of the season, but, by the end, we had become a very close-knit and spirit-filled team. Also, we got the opportunity to watch professional women’s squash at Grand Central, which really motivated the team and got us mentally prepared to play our games a few days after.”
