From the week of June 1st – June 5th, Hewitt students and faculty answered a poll sent out by The Hewitt Times asking them what political party they are affiliated with or what they identify as politically. Out of 84 respondents, 51% percent identified themselves as Democrats,  25% percent identified themselves as independents, 23% percent identified themselves as Republicans, and 1% percent identified his or herself as a member of a third party.

The poll was taken on SurveyMonkey.

I asked Christina Bowllan ’18, Camila Pavon ’17, and Alonnie Johnson ’17 what they thought of the results.

Christina Bowllan ’18 said, “I was surprised by these results because since we go to a school where a lot of the Republican [agenda] would favor their economic class, I would think that more people would identify as Republican.”

Camila Pavon ’17 noted, “It was surprising to see that a fourth of the school’s population identified itself as independent because I’ve never met someone who wasn’t affiliated with a specific party. I think this shows the diversity at Hewitt and people like me can have more knowledge on various topics.”

Alonnie Johnson ’17, however, was not surprised by the statistics. She credited her lack of surprise to the many debates students have in Upper School History classes, where students’ political views are apparent in their arguments.
