With The Games just a bit over a month away, alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn has announced that she will not be competing in the 2014 Olympic Games. Ranked as the best downhill skier since 2008 with the World Cup title, Vonn competed in her first Olympic Games in 2002, at the age of 17.

Since then, Vonn has won a gold and a bronze Olympic medals, one for Downhill and the other for Super-G, respectively. Winning her gold medal by a whole minute, Vonn brought joy and excitement to the US as she rebounded from an injury and returned with an incredible win. Vonn has won the Overall World Cup for three consecutive years (2008-2010) as well as in 2012, among other wins.

During last year’s February 5th Women’s Super-G at the Alpine Skiing World Championships in Schladming, Austria, Vonn crashed, breaking her leg and tearing her ACL due to the impact of her landing.

Atle Skaardal, the women’s race director of the International Ski Federation stated that “she jumped a little bit in the wrong direction and started to correct that a little bit in the air and put a lot of pressure on the outside ski exactly in the landing and she couldn’t hold the pressure and then [she crashed].”

Vonn’s fans fully support her decision to refrain from competing this year so that her injuries can heal completely. They are hopeful that when she returns, she will be able to once again rise to the top and compete in the 2018 Pyeonchang Olympics.
