Poetry was all the prattle within the Hewitt halls this past Wednesday, November 28th. The Venturer staff was excited to announce their second annual “Poetry Slam.” Upper school students gathered in the library to hear students and faculty members perform engaging renditions of original poems and recitals of poems written by others. The vibe in the room was electric, as many were strongly impressed by the readers and what they had to offer. It was truly great to see the Hewitt community come together through such an inspiring and often personal art form.

Taylor Scanlan ’15, a participant at the Poetry slam, shared a few words: “It was a really fun experience. Expressing yourself poetically is not really that easy, so after I had completed my poem I felt pretty accomplished. I felt as though I was connected to the community through my poem as many people can relate to the topic of ‘anticipation.'”

This event certainly marked an increase of the Venturer club’s presence within our community. Before this event, students really didn’t hear much about this club unless they were directly involved. But last Wednesday, we all got the chance to experience some of the writing styles and techniques with which Venturer deals every day. Expressing ourselves through writing is important and can lead us to break many unknown boundaries; Venturer really makes people aware of just that.

Venturer will be having another poetry slam in the spring, so stay tuned!
