Front cover of Rookie Yearbook One

“RookieMag.com is not a guide to Being a Teen or textbook on How to be a Young Woman. It’s a publication for teenage girls intending to make the best of the cringe- worthy awkwardness and sometimes sort of beautiful pain that is female adolescence.”

RookieMag.com is an online magazine that accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do – understand a teenage girl like me. The site, which is created and edited by a young style icon, Tavi Gevinson, is filled with amazing photographs, simple DIY projects, and relatable articles that leave you wondering, “How did they know?”

After devouring the Internet site on a daily-basis, I was delighted to discover the recently published Rookie Yearbook One. This “yearbook” is a compilation of all the timeless articles and pictures that were featured on the Rookie website during the past school year.  Throughout these pages (Yes! I’m finally getting to actually turn pages), you will find everything from stickers of bacons and bows to a three page guide on the art of “Bitchface”. (The editors note the disheartening trend of a derogatory word for women used as part of fashion and pop culture magazines aimed at a female audience–look for our article soon on this issue).

I got through 352 pages with ease. The articles have beautiful sentiment and a unique voice. You can learn about how many of the older and wiser dealt with high school from a book that understands that life isn’t what movies illustrate it to be. To quote ‘rapstress’ Kid Sister, “My only advice on surviving high school is this: Superfine Sharpies CAN be used as makeup and RANCH. Can. Go. On. Anything.”

Many other celebrities lend their voice to the magazine and write with no filter. You will encounter articles with an enjoyable femenist agenda, and pictures that don’t glorify a twisted image of what you’re ” supposed” to look like. The pages are adorned with brilliant playlists, and a record is even tucked in between the pages!

If you want to shy away from your traditional Vogue, even if just for a couple of nights, and get a taste of something new, then this is the book for you.
