Members of the Community Service Board wearing their dresses. credit: Ms. Dore

Last Friday, the entire Upper School got a dress down day, but for the first time, Hewitt students were wearing actual dresses!   Those students are all members of the Community Service Board, and no, this was not some coincidental link between altruism and formal dress.  They were promoting an event, the Memorial Sloane Kettering Pediatric Prom.  This prom is held every year for children with dance, and, every year, they have a drive to collect dresses for the children.

A member of our community, Harley Sherwood ’14, has been an important part of this drive for several years, and she has brought the drive to Hewitt.   She is thrilled to have our community be a part of the drive, and really hopes that our entire community will participate in it.

Harley stated,  “Watching the entire Community Service Board walk around in their `mock prom dresses’ and being asked about them, allowed our community to recognize the organization, hopefully prompting people in our community to donate.”

The Community Service Board certainly did not wear these dresses in vain. People will hopefully now remember the drive and bring in as many prom dresses as possible between February 27 to March 1.

So if the dresses were not enough, this is another reminder to donate! With your help, these cancer patients can have the opportunity to have the experience that every teenager looks forward to.

  1. The Memorial Sloane Kettering Pediatric Prom is such a great event, and I think wearing dresses to school was such a clever and great way of promoting this event.

  2. This is such a great, creative idea, giving patients at Memorial Sloane Kettering a chance to have a prom and have some fun! I am so eager, along with others, to get a chance to show my support and respect toward those that are patients at the Memorial Sloane Kettering hospital!- Taylor & Isabelle

  3. We think this drive is very creative and a great way support less fortunate children. Although the middle school did not get to participate in the dress down day, we look forward to participating in it in the future!!

  4. What a fantastic cause Harley has brought to the Hewitt community! The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is a world renown cancer treatment center and I am thrilled that we all had the chance to bring just a bit of happiness to young adults, like us, who are terminally ill. I hope we continue these prom dress drives at Hewitt in the future.
