If you have been in school for the past month, you probably heard of the Thanksgiving Drive that was run by our school this year. It was a special Thanksgiving themed food drive for the holidays that ended on Friday, November 14th.
What made it so special? Firstly, each food item that was donated, usually a Thanksgiving food such as cornbread mix, earned the donater’s team a point. This means that it was in part a competition between the blue and white teams, and if you were in the white team, for example, and donated one can of cranberry sauce, the white team received one point for your donation. At the end of the drive, the team that donated the most food would win. Although the drive has ended already, the winner is yet to be announced.

However, the Thanksgiving drive was not just about a competition, it was also about helping those in our New York community who are less fortunate than us. For those who suffer with food insecurity or poverty, life is difficult enough, but the holidays are even harder. Especially with a holiday like Thanksgiving, they are constantly reminded of their state and what they cannot provide for their families and for themselves. By establishing this food drive, our school community worked to relieve the burden on these shoulders of these people by giving them another way to gain access to food for the holidays. A way that will not cost them valuable money. Donating to charity is always a wonderful thing to do, but during the holidays, help is especially needed. The Thanksgiving Drive was a way of giving that help. Even though the drive has ended, you can still donate Thanksgiving food items, such as pies, to the New York Common Pantry as a way of giving back.
This Thanksgiving, one thing to be grateful for is the fact that you never have to worry when your next meal will come. With The Thanksgiving Food Drive, we gave those who do something to make their Thanksgiving less difficult. The drive might be over, but the spirit of it is not confined to the short couple weeks of a simple food drive. Give back to your community, it is never too late.
