The Hewitt Hawks just ended a challenging winter season and are now practicing for the spring sports season. Offerings for the spring sports this year are tennis, crew, badminton, and track & field. Each team has returning members who want to continue to improve their skills, and each team boasts new members who are willing to challenge themselves on a new sports team.

The varsity tennis team kicked off the season with tryouts the week of February 29th with a new coach. Practices are in the mornings from 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM, and the matches are after school. The team works hard practicing five days a week. Mia V.’18  said, “I am excited to play my hardest and be part of a supportive yet competitive team.”

The varsity crew team trains in the morning five days a week, with regattas after school and on the weekend. Helena C.’17 remarks, “I love crew; it’s my favorite sport. I enjoy the early morning wake-ups, and I love the feeling I get after taking part in regattas.”

The varsity track and field team is off to a great start practicing every day after school from 3:30 to 5:30 in Central Park and occasionally at Icahn Stadium. Bella E. ’18 said, “The track team is such a small group of girls, so we get to push each other, and all have different strengths. Our new coach seems really nice and has had a very successful running career, so I look forward to learning from her.”

The varsity badminton team practices from 3:30 to 5:30 every day after school at Hewitt gym or at Lenox Hill Neighborhood House. “Badminton is a great game, and I am excited to try something new and strive in the sport,” said Marlene A. ‘18.

The Hewitt student-athletes are eager for another great season of hard work and dedication, competitive matches, games and regattas. Stay tuned for sports updates and game recaps from the final sports season of the year!
