As I was approaching the building this morning, I saw girls leap from cars and taxis in red, white, and pink attire. After being out with strep for three days, I forgot that it was a dress-down day; however, my frown turned upside down as soon as I beeped myself in and spotted the Krispy Kreme box tower in the lobby.

At exactly 9:45 am, I made my way to Le Bistro for Student Council’s Valentine’s Single Awareness Day extravaganza. There was a mob of girls reaching their hands into the doughnut boxes, which were each filled half with glazed heart-shaped doughnuts and half with chocolate/glazed doughnuts. I scored a heart-shaped one, snapped a photo, and Instagram’d it using the caption, “Eating my glazed heart out.” In addition, there were red velvet cupcakes and fun little knick-nacks out on the table.

One would think a doughnut and a cupcake would be more than enough to fill a lonely, Valentine-less heart up, but no. Hewitt girls do not mess around when it comes to food. Thanks to the eighth graders, who designed the menu for today, all the Hewitt favorites were served in one 27-minute lunch period. It was actually overwhelming. The menu consisted of hamburgers, mini hotdogs, mac & cheese, crab cakes, caesar salad, and chicken noodle soup. The line stayed the same length for the entirety of the period because girls kept running up for seconds.

As I pushed the door open at 3:12 pm, I saw boys standing outside the building with roses and balloons picking up their Valentine.

I plugged in my headphones and walked home down Third Avenue listening to “Explosions” by Ellie Goulding on repeat as I passed young lovers holding hands and wearing smiles on their faces.

Overall, I think Valentine’s Day is a bittersweet holiday, the most prominent emotion depending on your current relationship status.

I put together a video of the Hewitt community’s Valentine’s Day plans.
