The tapping of cups and clapping of hands have been echoing through the Hewitt halls as many girls have been trying to teach themselves and their peers how to do the “Cups” song. The song “cups (You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone)” is an original track by unsigned band Lulu and the Lampshades, but the craze really started with Erato, a Swedish a capella group who created a YouTube video of themselves tapping to the beat of “Call Your Girlfriend” using empty margarine containers.

Soon after, two sisters, Lennon and Maisy Stella, 12 and 8-years old respectively, imitated Erato’s video and reached over 13 million views on Youtube.

When the movie Pitch Perfect came out in October, the number of videos continued to increase due to Anna Kendrick’s take on the original “Cups” song which combined Erato’s tapping and Lulu and the Lampshades’ song.

“Everywhere I turn, I hear girls flipping cups. Because everyone else has been doing it, I’m going to teach myself how to do it this weekend,” said Natalia Ryzak ’15.

When Savannah Stone ’15, Donee Blackburn ’15, Paulina Makkos ’15, and others were singing along to “Cups” in Le Bistro, Ish said to them, “This is the reason we run out of an entire pack of cups a day.”

I put together a video of a few Hewitt girls partaking in the “Cups craze.”
