I walked into the gym expecting to see the tables crowded with books but was shocked when there weren’t many bestseller options for me to choose–the other grades who came before me had already grabbed them all. Of the books left, the fourth graders and I were rushing excitedly to catch the most interesting titles. Wendy Mass was a big hit among us; when I got there, there were barely any of her books left! P.G. Kain’s “Commercial Breaks” series received just as much attention. Students were wiping out all of his books.

I first read Wendy Mass’ Candymakers in the third grade, on the edge of my seat with excitement as the story unfolded. The author’s ability to write complex stories and have the reader feel like a character in her stories makes her a real hit among the Hewitt fourth graders. Her books at the book fair included Eleven Birthdays, Every Soul A Star, and Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life. Olivia Tutino ’21 bought, Flutter, Keeper, and Eleven Birthdays, “all by Wendy Mass.”

In addition to selling books at the book fair, the Hewitt Parent’s Association sold Hewitt merchandise, and Hewitt’s own Finance Club sold its new product, “No Fear, No Rear,” shorts that go under our uniforms to keep us fully covered. My classmate, Ashley Glatt ’21, stated, “Shorts are a good idea because in gym there is no time to change, and we could just take off our skirt.” Hewitt hoodies, gummy bear pencil sharpeners, and pillows were among the many other items sold.
