As the presents sit comfortably in their hiding spots and the snow begins to fall, a nearby Hewitt classroom is filled with a chorus of coughing fits. Flu season has arrived. To save yourself from the runny nose, sore throat, and sizzling fever of the flu virus, read these 5 easy steps–otherwise, happy sneezing!

  1. Get a vaccination. 1 in 5 people catch the flu every season. The most effective way to boost your immune system is to get vaccinated for the flu virus. Vaccinations available at your pediatrician’s office and at many pharmacies and clinics.
  2. Wash your hands as much as possible. Even touching a surface that was touched by a person with the flu can make you sick. Using an anti-bacterial soap (like the kind in the bathrooms at Hewitt) and even carrying a small container of hand sanitizer (for on-the-go germ prevention) will make all the difference.
  3. Get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. This will provide your body with the time that it needs to recuperate and fight off potential diseases.

  4. Reduce Stress. As the semester winds down, stress is totally normal. But try these techniques to keep your stress at a minimum, and the flu won’t stand a chance.
  5. As much as we love our friends and want to comfort them when they’re sick, it’s much safer to send them a get well card than to visit them in person–close contact with a sick person is the easiest way to catch a disease.
