On October 16th-19th, Hewitt will be celebrating International Day of the Girl. It was just last spring when Hewitt became partners with a campaign of the U.N. foundation called Girl Up.

The mission of the organization is to create the next generation of women leaders in the U.S., by mobilizing American teen girls to channel their energy and compassion into helping raise awareness and funds for underprivileged adolescent girls.

The idea behind the day is to get people thinking about how to improve the lives and opportunities of girls across the world and discussing gender inequalities and women stereotypes. Hewitt is kicking off the first annual Day of the Girl with a bang, which includes a pep rally with a special appearance from Harriet the Hawk and guest speakers.

When asked what is in store for the coming week, Sofia Stafford ’13, the chair of the 7-12 student service board, said, “I don’t want to reveal too much, but it will be more hands on, and there may or may not be an international dance party. The community service board has been working diligently the past few weeks for this event, and we are so excited for this inaugural pep rally to both celebrate and educate our community!”

Here are some helpful hints on how to prepare for Hewitt’s International Day of the Girl’s pep rally:

• Wear anything purple to support gender equality across the world.

• Put your dancing shoes on!

• Get ready to have fun!
