Ms. Gallin and Ms. Petrella rooting their team on at the spirit game

On Monday, January 23rd, Hewitt’s varsity basketball team played Spence. This game, however, was not an ordinary game, for it was Hewitt’s first spirit game! The entire school was invited to come and support, and there was an incredible turn out. Face paint gleamed on cheeks and foreheads, and pom-poms shook wildly as the team put up a remarkable fight. The girls’ quick hands and tenacious defense kept the other team flustered. Whenever a point was made, the crowd went wild. A wave even went through the crowd at one point.

Everybody was impressed by the players’ endurance and determination. Daniel Niederman ’12 did a fine job of getting in great defensive position and flailing her arms to make the offensive player nervous, resulting in her throwing a bad pass. Marina King ’13, the team’s main point guard, took the ball down with a purpose. She made clean passes to her teammates and even scored a few points on fast breaks. Dakota Homsey ’12 faked and scored multiple points with ease.

The players all jumped for rebounds and defended the opposing team tightly. They stayed strong and never gave up, which is truly admirable, especially to a JV basketball player like me. Even though Hewitt did not walk away with a win that day, everyone in the crowd was extremely proud of how the girls played. Spirit day was definitely a success, and I can foresee even more fans at future games. Go Hawks!
