When walking down Madison Avenue on 71st street, you will now come upon the famous French macaroon shop, Laduree.  They sell Parisian style macaroons,  a sweet confection made with egg whites, sugar, food coloring, and sometimes almond powder. The macaroon is filled with a flavorful buttercream or jam and then sandwiched between two delicate meringue cookies.

Upon arriving at the store, you will notice the celadon green awning with the fine gold lettering, showing off the company’s French origins. The antique wood and sophisticated decor beckon to anyone who happens to walk by. To get a taste of the company’s style, visit their website at http://www.laduree.fr/. The graphics on the site reflect the elegance of the store’s design perfectly.

It seems perfect so far- a great scene and even better treats. What’s the catch? The lines, which often extend out the door! With hope, they will fade after the holidays, but for now, the best time to go is early, right when they open. The store hours are Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m.

Their flavors consist of raspberry, vanilla, chocolate, pistachio, caramel, lemon, orange blossom, black currant, licorice, rose, coffee, and coconut. Each season there are special flavors featured for a short period of time. Even for the quality of these macarons they are pricey, $2.70 a cookie. But with lines out the door, even months after its opening, there does not seem to be much incentive the lower the price anytime soon. But one thing we know for sure–Laduree will not be leaving NYC anytime soon.
