Today I would like to talk about something that really bothers me: people ridden with salad bar anxiety.

At 12:51 Hewitt girls are springing from their chairs to get a spot on the boundless salad bar line. After tactfully choosing which staircase is faster, most of us will enter the cafeteria wondering if this is some alternate reality, a shock of utter disbelief that sinks to the bottom of an empty stomach. This cannot be the line, one might think; well it most certainly is.

After finally enduring the pain of standing for 7 minutes, if you’re lucky, you make it to the salad bar. Fantastic! But wait: the person in front of you is having a crisis. To add hearts of palm or to not add hearts of palm? Are the heirloom tomatoes hard today?  Mesclun or romaine? The girl will not budge. You might be on to better things, already having picked the lettuce you want and now getting excited for grilled chicken…but there is no telling when you’ll get there.

For those of you who struggle with decisions on the salad bar, I have a few suggestions.
1. Plan ahead! Never wait until the last minute when making a salad and think about your options during the class before lunch.
2. Do some good! If you’re aware of this indecisiveness (the first step is admitting you have a problem), step off of the line and wait until you have decided.
3. “Make salads with purpose,” as Ms. Weber would say. There is no time to ponder about your feelings towards grilled chicken, and it is certainly not an excuse to take your time.
