On Thursday, November 10, the 8th graders took a trip to Staten Island for community service day, where they worked in a soup kitchen and food pantry through the non-profit organization Project Hospitality. The grade helped people shop, stocked shelves, and unloaded a truck of food donations.

The students helped prepare food for the homeless and others in need, and they also had the opportunity to serve them food as well. Everyone had fun working together and helping others. It was a great day, and the 8th graders were happy to finally have a new service project for community service day.

When we got back to Hewitt, everyone was smiling and happy. “Community service day was fun and really inspiring,” remarked Olivia Tracey ’16. “I enjoyed assisting people pick out their food and when they smiled it made me happy,” added Jane Demarest ’16. The comments from the 8th grade  showed that 2011’s community service day was a success!
