The Winner of This Year's Super Bowl - the Green Bay Packers

Football: (noun) a game which involves a lot of players, aggression, and beer

Super-bowl: (noun) the biggest game of the football season (synonyms: sports, Americans)

On February 9, 2011, about 111 million viewers gathered around their televisions to watch the Super Bowl, making it the show with the largest audience of all time. However, I doubt that every single person was watching because they wanted to watch the football.  Like me, some of us enjoy the commercials and, of course, the half-time show more than the actual game.

Let’s first look at the commercials.

Mini Darth Vader vs. Volkswagen

Fox News posted all of the commercials that were aired during the Super Bowl online. They, also, created an option where one can rate each of the commercials.  The top-rated commercial was Bridgestone’s beaver commercial, which they named “Bridgestone- Karma.”  Coming in a close second was Volkswagen’s commercial with a young Darth Vader, named “Volkswagen Passat: Young Vader.”  I personally find that, of these two, the Darth Vader commercial is better.  It will stick with me longer, and it is just adorable.

A good Super Bowl commercial is one that is entertaining, funny, creative, and a little realistic.  Yes, the Bridgestone commercial was creative, but it was just not very entertaining for me.  I do not find a beaver acting like a human to be very amusing.

On the other end of the spectrum, the commercial garnering the worst ratings was one of Ford’s commercials, named “Ford: Focus Rally.”  Some of the worst commercials also include: “Castrol: Strongest Drive,” “Mini: Cram it,” and “Hyundai Elantra: Snap out of it.”

These commercials just bore you and remind you of all the other commercials that you watch during the year.  For example, the Ford commercial is not creative, entertaining, or funny.  It is, also, too realistic.

Now, let’s change gears.

The stars of this year’s half-time show were the Black Eyed Peas.  I personally found this show to be very impressive.

Black Eyed Peas in the Super-bowl

They kicked off their performance with “I Gotta Feeling” and then remixed to many of their other popular songs, such as “Boom Boom Pow” and “Pump It.”  In the beginning, Slash made an appearance and had a duet with Fergie.

The music was good, but the truly incredible part of the performance was the dancing and presentation itself.  The stage was in the center of a sea of people, who were wearing white glow-in-the-dark suits.  As they danced to the music in perfect sync, they seemed like a choreographed crowd.  The Black Eyed Peas also did a bit of dancing themselves, and they were wearing space-like suits.  In general, this performance was very entertaining.  I enjoyed the dancing and the presentation; however, the actual singing was not as good as I would have hoped coming from Grammy award winners like the Black Eyed Peas.

I can’t wait to watch next year’s Super Bowl commercials and half-time show–maybe I’ll even watch a little bit of the football in between, especially if Janae Barrett gets her way!
