Congratulations, Hewitt Basketball! This year has been one of Hewitt’s most successful basketball seasons in years. Coach Ray said, “I would definitely say that this is the strongest year for basketball Hewitt has ever had. Our varsity team is a legitimate contender for the league championship, as we have a very experienced team with four seniors in the starting lineup. This is by far JV’s best season since we added that level into the program eight years ago, and I anticipate our middle school team being very competitive at their season-culminating tournament.”
Varsity Basketball’s record so far is 9 – 4, with their most recent win over Chapin by a whopping 15 points— a comeback from the last Hawks/Gators match-up in the Spence Classic, which Chapin won by 20 points.
Some players would agree that much of the season’s success is due to the senior powerhouse that makes up the majority of the team. Samara Foster, Varsity Co-captain, said, “I am honestly so proud of what our team has accomplished. Coach Ray has said he feels completely confident putting any one of the girls on the court, knowing that they will do great things.” There is no doubt that the team has a chance in the upcoming tournament (knock on wood!—as Carly Konsker would do).
The Junior Varsity Team has also shown improvement from years past with a record of 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the AAIS. Their most recent win was against Trevor. The girls’ shots, hustling, and defense stamina led them to an astonishing victory of 39 to 12. Danielle Niderman said, “Honestly, before, the team did not come together as much, but now we are so much more unified. Our shots were much more consistent also!” Make sure to catch the basketball teams in the first round of the upcoming tournaments. Both Varsity and JV play on Wednesday February 23, at 4:30pm. Keep it up Hewitt!!!!!!!!
