The fall sports season has come to a close, and winter sports options are underway at Hewitt where students are participating in strength and conditioning, squash, and basketball.

Hewitt basketball consists of a varsity team and a JV team that both meet five times a week at Hewitt’s new home court at Lenox Hill Neighborhood House.

“I’ve been doing basketball since 7th grade, and I love it because basketball itself is so exciting,” says, Brianna Harris 17′. “It’s also a great bonding experience and gives you a chance to get to know the people on your team in a new way”

Hewitt is also offering Varsity Squash this winter. Squash is played by two or four people inside a four walled court. The players alternate hitting the ball with their racket against the front wall, while it may also hit the back and side walls. According to Forbes magazine, squash is considered one of the best sports to play, offering  flexibility, building muscle, and endurance.

¨I walked into my first squash practice not having ever even touched a squash racket,” said Carly Spilker 18′, “but after the fun daily practices with my teammates and coach, I drastically improved my skills!¨

The Varsity Squash team practices five times a week at the Yale Club, where they get to play squash on two courts and condition in the Yale Club gym. The team also works with skilled and knowledgeable trainers and squash coaches.

Strength and Conditioning is also underway this winter. This takes place at Asphalt Green three times a week. Conditioning is great especially for the athletes who are training for a spring sport.

“I think my favorite part of Winter Conditioning was how much stronger I got after the season was over,” Bella Eagan ’18 said. “I could definitely see the improvements; it is a commitment but it’s a lot less of a commitment than other Hewitt sports because it’s only three times a week. It’s very manageable with other extracurriculars and school work.”
