Famous designers from all over the world came to New York City to exhibit their spring 2014 collections and attend other fashion shows during the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week last month. Designers like Rachel Zoe, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Ralph Lauren were just a few of the popular designers who held shows. All of the fashion shows are very exclusive; only the top designers and celebrities are invited.

I got the opportunity to speak with Natalie Landsberg ’14, who attended NYFW:

“I went to NYFW because I am interested in photography, and I thought it would be a great place to find well-dressed, interesting people to take pictures of. When I was downtown snapping photos, I got to see some of the DKNY show, which was pretty awesome to witness. I also loved seeing all the celebrities, like Bella Thorne, Bill Cunningham, and Kelly Obsbourne. So I basically went for the photo aspect, but I ended up loving the whole scene and went back two more days.”

Since 2009, there has been an event called Fashion’s Night Out, also known as FNO, hosted by various NYC stores for one night during Fashion Week. Usually, participating stores had sales or invited celebrity guests to come to their stores in order to attract shoppers.

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to attend a FNO event at Dolce and Gabbana to meet Justin Bieber. Outside the store, as one could imagine, were screaming girls and tons of police. Celebrities like Lana Del Rey, Debra Messing, Sarah Jessica Parker, and the Kardashians all made appearances last year in different stores: people were coming to these host stores only to catch a glimpse of a celebrity, not to browse or purchase the clothes.

The event was cancelled this year, not only because of the outrageous mobs in the Meatpacking district last year when a car was flipped over, but also because the stores weren’t making a profit from it anymore. Fashion’s Night Out is on hold for 2014.
