For those of us unable to be graced with direct access to the couture, the colors, and the innovative ideas of high fashion, we rely on the New York Times Style Section and every fashion blog known to tune us in to the Spring 2012 trends presented during Fashion Week.

Just days into September, New York Fashion Week floods the city. Every department store in Manhattan goes into lockdown, designers get behind the sewing machine to finish the last hemline, and models prep for the month ahead. New York Fashion Week is the event of the fall, and this year it had the city buzzing more than ever before.

Designers premiered their work for spring of 2012, and there are notable trends. As far as accessories go, according to Elle “Retro,” small shaped bags were hot on the runway (i.e Cynthia Rowley), as well as the Lady Gaga type shoe. Playing it safe is simply not an option in New York Fashion Week anymore, whether you’re in the show or just watching the show. As far as what the models were wearing, each designer continued to surprise us with their eccentric styles and extraordinary pieces.

But honestly, what’s the fun of Fashion Week if you cannot sit front row of a runway show?  Nytimes.com presented several shows online, placing the camera as though you were one of the paparazzi at the end of the catwalk—this made up for the elusive front row seat!

One of the best parts about New York Fashion Week is the somewhat new FNO (Fashion Night Out), when every 5th and Madison Avenue stores stays open after hours, accompanied by DJ’s, cocktails, and celebrities. Once again it is a time for those of us who cannot strut down the catwalk to feel a part of one of the greatest weeks of the fall.

We can safely assume that this spring will be as fierce as ever when it comes to fashion. From top designers like Karl Lagerfeld to those newer designers like Prabal Gurung, Fashion Week kicked off the upcoming year in style.

Below are links to videos straight from the runway that style editor, Sydney Sadick, took at some shows during NYFW.
