New York is known as the empire state. A state that rules the empire of America, and a state you don’t want to mess with. However, last year, many fans did not have much to cheer for.
The Knicks basketball team was losing games at a faster rate than Hewitt girls lose their chargers. The New York Rangers hockey team, for the first time in 5 years, failed to make the playoffs. Also last year, The New York Giants, 2008 national champions, lost badly to their brother team, the New York Jets, among many others, landing 18th in the league. Their brother team, however, was not able to retrieve the championships and lost in the playoffs. All hopeful eyes were turned to the New York Yankees in the World Series last year. They lived up to their true name and won the world series.
But, “there is a time for everything. A time to lose and a time to win.” With new draft picks and free agents. The NewYork Knicks came back with the new recruit, Amari Stoudemire. With their spirits dwindling after last year’s season, many fans did not think that the Knicks could ever wake up from their deadening losses. Stoudemire is a hopeful sign that the New York Knicks may have more juice left in them after all. Recently, the Knicks beat the Heat on January 27th after a showdown at Madison Square Garden. The famous Lebron James, missed many shots in the game and Dwayne Wade’s jump balls could not save the game. The score was 93-88, and let me tell you, New Yorkers, we have bragging rights!
This year, our New York Jets, tried their best. After the New York Giants lost to Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles, all football fans in New York turned their attention to the only team that could save them – the New York Jets. Ecstatic after they beat the nearly perfect Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, the New York Jets were ready to play one more game to gain a ticket to the 2011 Superbowl. Unfortunately, the New York Jets could not beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, and all hopes were crushed. But, flip those sad faces upside down, because even though we were not able to make it to the Superbowl, we were pretty close.
Disappointment increased with anger at the New York Yankees. For a baseball team who won the World Series only the year before, the Yankees did not live up to their fans’ expectations in 2010. In the playoffs, the New York Yankees were up against the Giants in a 5 game competition. The first game, the Yankees won, giving their fans some much needed assurance that the ticket to the World Series was not such a far reach. However, the San Francisco Giants crushed the Yankees, causing the Yankees fans to lose all hope of making it to the World Series. It seems that Jeter and A-Rod could not save New York this time.
Even though some teams disappointed us and others surprised us, there is no team like New York’s teams.
