[pullquote]Fitting in is so often survival. Being different can get you killed. It’s a privilege to be able to celebrate your weirder side when the world is so violent. — Arabelle Sicardi[/pullquote]

Arabelle Sicardi is a fashion blogger and feminist who is famous for her bold outfits and colorful makeup.

On her blog, Sicardi writes to debunk the popular notion that makeup is like the 21st century version of a corset: “fake” beauty for the self-conscious. She writes to promote the power of makeup.

Sicardi explains that makeup is powerful because it can be a way to stand out or blend in; either way, it’s your choice. Makeup, like clothing, can reveal a lot about a person. Eye shadow doesn’t necessarily need to pair with your skin tone. According to Sicardi, you should wear whatever hot pink, dark green, or gold color you want, as long as what you want to be revealed about yourself shines through.

Sicardi puts it simply: “I want people to be happy.”  If you put on an outfit that makes you feel comfortable,  wear it. Don’t wear what’s trendy; wear you.

Arabelle Sicardi is a self-proclaimed feminist. By viewing fashion through the lens of women’s rights, Sicardi has taken the world of fashion by storm.  Women are constantly expected to dress a certain way for different occasions.  For Sicardi, these expectations are what oppress women. Most women wake up in the morning thinking, “What would I look best in?” But usually, “looking best” is not your picture of beauty but rather society’s. The mere act of getting dressed in the morning is evidence of the unequal and unfair pressure that women face.

Sicardi takes society’s norms out of the picture, and she dresses to be happy. Sicardi is more than a fashionista; she is fashion figure changing the way society views beauty. In 2012, Arabelle, unexpectedly and unofficially, became the ring leader of  #feministmakeupping, an equivalent to ‘Yonce’s #IWokeUpLikeThis, but using makeup, rather than a bare face, as a key to confidence.
