STEMinism: Recognizing the Gender Gap

This post, one in a series for the sophomore English blog project, can be found featured on L’Oreal USA For Girls In Science here. We live in the 21st century, a progressive time in which equality rules… or so we’re told. But is that really the truth? The disheartening answer, when it comes to STEM, is no. STEMinism is the act of closing the gender gap in the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It is less about actual feminism and more about reaching a balanced world of STEM. Are you a STEMinist? At The Hewitt School, the idea that STEM careers are better suited for boys simply does not exist. The all-female environment provides a space for unique opportunities where girls can pursue any and all interests. Having attended Hewitt since kindergarten, I have … Continue reading

Don’t Get Scroogled!

Bing it on, Google! What does that phrase remind you of? A ferocious fighting song, or perhaps sassy competition at its finest? When Microsoft recently launched their Scroogled campaign against Google, phrases like this one became the norm around technological circles. The purpose of the campaign is to encourage users to stop using Google’s Gmail service and to instead joinMicrosoft’s Outlook services. By echoing Google’s debated malpractice of targeting ads by grabbing keywords from emails, Microsoft has hooked users by appealing to the population’s privacy concerns, which have become increasingly relevant due to some of Google’s tactics. The “Don’t Get Scroogled” campaign targets a privacy problem that has many people worried. Google scans emails in order to target and tailor advertising alongside the message to the user. The question we, as consumers, must ask is whether this … Continue reading

Hewitt Students Turned Architects-in-Training

What do paper, tape, and gum all have in common? They’re all items used in the most recent challenge undertaken by Hewitt’s 13 architects-in-training. This past Thursday, on our third visit to Robert A. M. Stern Architects, our mentors challenged us to create the highest structure possible that could successfully hold a pack of gum using only three pieces of paper and 12″ of Scotch tape . The word “challenge” successfully describes the task, especially when given a time constraint of 30 minutes. However, when time was up, we realized we had put our day’s structural engineering lecture to good use, ultimately producing some impressive structures. Have you wondered about those new bulletin boards in the fishbowl, covered with drawings, thumbtacks  and bright green Post-it notes? They’re reserved specifically for the ACE Mentor program, which gives a … Continue reading

Learning to Code, Coding to Learn

How do you make a cheese sandwich? – Find two slices of bread. – Place a slice or two of cheese on one of the slices of bread. – Make sure the cheese is sliced and not string cheese. – Put the two slices of bread together. Congratulations! You’re officially a programmer… well, sort of. But before you rejoice, let me backtrack before I lead to any further confusion. This past Tuesday, HT editor-in-chief, Anna Mendelson ’13, and I attended our second General Assembly workshop, titled “Programming for Non-Programmers: Fundamentals.” After walking into the GA building for the second time in one week, the first thing we asked the lady at the check-in desk was, “Do you know if there’s a dinner break?” It was, after all, a workshop from 6pm – 10pm. When we … Continue reading

#SocialMedia4Good

Social media (n.) – Websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and develop social and professional contacts. This is how the social media revolution started. The first big step that carved the way for our world of social media was taken in August 2003 with the launch of Myspace, a social networking service owned by Specific Media LLC and Justin Timberlake. It was one of the first sites in which users could “connect” in the least literal sense of the word. That was the first step society took towards the revolutionary world of internet which we all know and love(?) today. However, Myspace is now thought of simply as an outdated version of Facebook. Just six months after the creation of Myspace, the notorious Mark Zuckerberg introduced … Continue reading
