What to say when cookies are served at the bistro….

Finally, it’s been too long. As to same-sex marriage, five more states will finally legalize gay marriage.

Wait, but wasn’t that so four years ago?

No. In 2011, New York recognized gay marriage; however, as progressive as we seem, New York was not the first state to legalize it; it was Hawaii, in 1996. For the past decade, states’ governments have been in charge of deciding whether to recognize gay marriage and allow those couples to enjoy the benefits of a recognized marriage such as medical-decision making and social security benefits.

What did Mrs. Gallin just allude to yesterday…

You’ve probably heard the words legalize and gay marriage this week quite a few times. On October 6,, the U.S. Supreme Court gave a cold shoulder followed by a shrug to Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin, who have been searching for their rights to uphold bans on gay marriage, trying to overturn lower court decisions that would effectively strike down those bans. In other words, the Supreme Court made a huge decision without actually making a decision. They declined to hear any of these states’ appeals regarding the legalization of gay marriage. As a result, the Supreme Court’s shrug has forced five states to drop their bans on gay marriage because their appeals failed to reach court.

Not to be a party pooper, but…

Note that while this is a victory for same-sex couples and their supporters, half of the US still hasn’t legalized same-sex marriage. As of October 14th, 30 states recognize same-sex marriage, but there are still 20 states that have the ban in place, but that’s just in the U.S. Seventy six countries uphold their gay marriage ban today.  In countries like Nigeria and Iran, coming out as gay is a death sentence.

What to say when people blame the Vatican

It’s not all their fault. Those who oppose gay marriage refer to religious texts such as the Bible that many believe give a pretty straightforward ‘no’ to homosexuality. However, on October 13, Catholic bishops released a document that says, “Gays have gifts and qualities to offer.” The document provides a new direction for the Roman Catholic Church, a more lenient and progressive one at that.

This week…
