Who knew spending $5 on a college ice cream-making course would be the foundation of the unparalleled ice cream company known as Ben and Jerry’s? Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield brought the world famous flavors like Half Baked and Phish Food, and last month, they amazed us once again with five new “Core” flavors.

As a hard-core Nutella lover, I had very high expectations for this flavor. Hazed and Confused was the first Core flavor I tried and, astonishingly, it exceeded my expectations. The ice cream ravished my taste buds, leaving me amazed by how scrumptious even the spoonful was. The mixture of chocolate and hazelnut ice creams gives a soothing, cool, rich taste as the hazelnut fudge core and fudge chips create diversity of texture in every bite.

The peanut buttery taste enveloped my mouth as I took my first taste of this wonderful chocolate and peanut butter mix. This flavor tastes like a giant Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup but in a cold, smooth form. The peanut butter ice cream is so authentic in taste that it tastes like I’m actually eating cool, sweet peanut butter. The blend of the peanut butter and chocolate ice creams with the addition of little peanut butter cups makes me feel like I could eat this ice cream forever; the taste never gets old and my longing for it only grows with every bite. Susannah Meyer ’15 taste-tested this flavor, stating: “It’s not too salty, but not too sweet either. The blondie bits add in a nice textural contrast. I’m afraid I would finish this whole pint if you left me alone with it for half an hour or so.” Susannah continued to “taste-test” the ice cream long after the interview finished…

I was very excited for the chocolate and raspberry combination in this flavor, and the core just seemed like the cherry on top. The chocolate and raspberry ice creams complemented each other like cheese on macaroni; the addition of fudge chips and the raspberry core made it irresistible. The raspberry core and fudge chips change the consistency of the ice cream with little surprises in each and every bite. This flavor tastes like an ice cream version of this Godiva chocolate. A reference to all you art historians: each taste tester, including myself, reported states of indulgence while enjoying “Core” flavors, which rival that of Saint Teresa of Avila in this work by Bernini. Ben and Jerry’s really hit the jackpot with this batch of new flavors. Every single one is exceptionally tasty, addictive, and the work of true flavor gurus.
