Ten Years Later: Hewitt’s Thoughts on 9/11

In 21st Century America, no event is perhaps as significant to the development of our  nation’s social awareness and thought as 9/11. On that sunny Tuesday morning of September 11th, 2001, Hewitt Students followed routine. Natalie Landsberg ’14 remembered, “That day was my second day in Kindergarten. All the girls were dressed in their plaid jumpers and excited for a full day of school.” However, at 9:00 am, when the first tower was struck by American Airlines Flight 11, many students felt the impact of the attack in various ways. Julia Bronheim ’13 recalled, “My mother picked me up from Hewitt. Although I was young, I knew something must have been wrong because she used to only pick me up before she left for business trips.” Natalie also remembered the state of confusion she experienced when everyone’s parents … Continue reading

European Debt Crisis – The Reason for Politicians’ Ruined Summers?

Although you may not hear too much about it, the United States is not the only place in the world burdened by a significantly large amount of debt. The Euro zone, an economic and monetary union comprised of seventeen European Union member states with  the Euro as their official currency, faces a similar, if not more dire, situation. The euro zone’s debt has been growing at a dangerous rate since the end of 2009, especially in the more economically troubled countries, such as Greece and Ireland. Every government issues bonds in order to finance a country’s daily operations. These can be purchased by a country’s own citizens (domestic debt) or by foreigners (external debt). For example, Greece’s sovereign debt stood at 113% of its GDP in 2009. Of that 113%, 82% was external debt. External debt … Continue reading

Are Website Programmers getting Stupider, or are Hackers getting Smarter?

More and more frequently, there have been reports about hacked websites, cell phones, and security systems. For example, the infamous phone scandal of July 2011 exposed Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World to a criminal investigation and public outcry. The British tabloid hired people to hack into the cell phone of a 13-year-old murder victim in order to intercept voicemail and text messages and get a leg up on the story of this girl’s kidnapping. The News of the World also hacked into the phones of those related to fallen soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. A more locally resonant example is the recent hacking of the NBC Twitter account by a group who calls themselves The Script Kiddies. This group posted three tweets concerning a new terrorist attack on Ground Zero just before 6pm on … Continue reading

Did You Do Your Summer Reading?

It’s almost difficult to believe that we recently ended a naturally hectic 2010-2011 school year here at Hewitt. Students, and probably teachers too, were eager for the clock to announce the first minute of a well-deserved summer vacation. However, no Hewitt student’s summer would be complete without a healthy dose of summer reading This past summer, members of the Upper School were asked to read a myriad of books for more than just their English classes.  Some of these books were even interdisciplinary, such as Karen Maitland’s black plague mystery Company of Liars, which presented a black plague induced, page turning reinterpretation of Chaucer’s classic The Canterbury Tales, according to a Booklist review on Amazon.com.  Ninth Graders had a riveting introduction to their study of British and European literature in Dr. Sabol’s class. The book that … Continue reading
